Total Addressable Market

Understanding the total addressable market is crucial for B2B sales teams as it helps them identify all possible opportunities to grow their business. This includes identifying new markets, customer segments, and geographic regions that have not yet been tapped.

In practice, determining the total addressable market involves conducting thorough market research, analyzing customer data, and considering competitive landscapes. AI agents can assist in this process by collecting and analyzing data, but ultimately, human approval is required for any customer-facing actions.

TAM is usually estimated top-down (industry size times your share of wallet) or bottom-up (possible accounts times average contract value), with the bottom-up build being the more defensible for a B2B SaaS plan. TAM sets the ceiling; SAM and SOM narrow it to what you can realistically serve and win. Clean account data is what makes a bottom-up TAM trustworthy, since a list full of duplicates or bad firmographics inflates the count.
